Less and More - The Design Ethos by Dieter Rams PDF Print E-mail
Written by waikit

In over 40 years at Braun, Dieter Rams established himself as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. His elegantly clear visual language not only defined product design for decades, but also our fundamental understanding of what design is and what it can and should do. Elucidating the design philosophy of Dieter Rams, Less and More is the ultimate collection of images of all of Rams’s products as well as selected sketches and models. In addition to the complete visual presentation of his designs, new texts by international experts reevaluate his work in a contemporary context.

Check out three interviews with Dieter Rams here:

Another great video from TED. This time Eames Demetrios passionately presents rarely seen footage of the designs and processes of his grandparents and legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames, who made films, houses and classic mid century modern furniture. He talks about how they approach design with their philosophy on the relationship between design, business and lifestyle.

Here is an interesting explanatory video, named 'Resonance', which is about design strategists and how they identify the right ideas. The film is created by the global innovation consultancy Continuum. It is a very nice visualized and really inspiring video, in which you will find out where and how meaningful ideas are coming from. Watch and enjoy!

David Kelley About The Process Of Design PDF Print E-mail
Written by waikit

Design Sojourn tweeted about a video of David Kelley, in which he talks about the process of design. He believes that you need a language, a process and a framework in order to design. He stresses that experience is key success factor: learn from all the projects you've worked on, distill the knowledge and apply it to your future projects. He recommends reading The Art of Innovation for IDEO's concept of a great process.

In the next video Kelley talks about how the observation phase is the most overlooked part of the development process. Kelley hires social scientists to watch people complete tasks instead of asking them usability questions. He prefers to see them as customers instead of users and strongly believes that customer satisfaction comes with understanding their values. He gives examples of how his team will observe a customer in their usual environment instead of inviting them into a sterile lab for product testing. The case studies he presents include a television remote control.

The last video shows that Kelley believes that how quickly you create an initial prototype is directly proportional to how successful a product will be. Essentially, given a set project deadline, the earlier you invite feedback, the more chances you have to revise and improve. He calls this "enlightened trial and error."

Don Norman: The three ways that good design makes you happy PDF Print E-mail
Written by waikit
Tuesday, 31 March 2009 16:48

TED.com has just published a video from 2003 in which Don Norman, a cognitive scientist and design critic, is explaining how designs can make people happy in three ways.

The three principles and the examples Don is talking about can be found back in his book 'Emotional Design: Why we love (or hate) everyday things' , which contain some interesting insights to create designs that please people.

According to Don, design can be perceived in three ways:

- Visceral experience; is about the appearance, touch and feel of a product

- Behavioral level; is about the interaction between a user and the product (function, performance, usability)

- Reflective experience; is about the meaning of a product, the message the product sends out to others

If your design succeeds well on these three levels of experiences, then your design must make people happy right?

Enjoy the video!

Download and read the prologue from his book in which he talks about three teapots, illustrating the three ways of perceiving design.
